Mosquito vs. Bed Bug Bites: How To Tell the Difference

August 28, 2021

Mosquitoes and bed bugs are some of the most common insects that are found in households. Other than that, their bites appear similar. With these in hand, it’s crucial to recognize and distinguish the difference between their bites to know the proper treatment. To help give you a better differentiation, here are some of the things you need to know.

Mosquito Bites

Mosquitoes are flying insects that feed on flower nectar and fruit juices. The females, however, also feed on blood to produce eggs. Their saliva irritates the skin and is identified as mosquito bites. These bites generally look like multiple red raised bumps, sometimes resembling bruises and dark spots. They’re itchy and sometimes moderately painful. Typically, these bites disappear after a few days.

Treatment for Mosquito Bites

Mosquito bites rarely require treatment, but if the itchiness persists, it would be best to apply a topical antihistamine cream or an ice pack on the bitten area. You can also use mosquito repellents to drive mosquitoes away and reduce the risk of getting bit.

Bed Bug Bites

Unlike mosquitoes, bed bugs are brownish insects that feed solely on the blood of animals and humans. They are mostly active at night and during the early morning when most of their prey are asleep. These bites can occur anywhere in the body, which may have been exposed while sleeping.

Dissimilar to mosquito bites, most bed bug bites are painless at first. Some of the distinct indications are inflammation and irritation on the bite sites. You may also experience burning sensations and red bumps surrounded by blisters or hives. In rare cases, people could develop severe reactions such as fever, difficulty in breathing, and even irregular heartbeat.

Treatment for Bed Bug Bites

Most bed bug bites heal on their own. Some of the medications that you can use to relieve the symptoms are anti-itch creams and pain relievers. If you experience more severe reactions, consult your doctor immediately.
